Foundation For Global Scholars Announces $10,000 Donation

Foundation For Global Scholars Announces $10,000 Donation From STA Travel To Support North American Students To Study Abroad

Denver, CO (PRWEB) March 7, 2011

The Foundation for Global Scholars today announced it has received a $10,000 donation from STA Travel Inc., the youth travel expert enabling students and young adults to explore the world by creating experiences filled with adventure, discovery and personal growth.

The donation is the third from STA Travel given to the foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that raises funds to assist students in gaining cultural and academic experiences across the globe.

“With this donation, STA Travel is backing the efforts of the Foundation for Global Scholars for the third consecutive year, which is a tremendous show of support for our work helping deserving students to study abroad,” said Foundation Chair Christie Doherty. “This generous gift also comes at an opportune time following our global expansion to fund scholarships to any destination – not just Asia Pacific.”

STA Travel’s most recent donation will directly aid the foundation’s mission, which is to help young adults in North America become global citizens and leaders. The STA Travel scholarships are designated for students majoring in photography, film and art, travel and tourism, international business, international studies, and foreign language.

“In the daily work of STA Travel, we get to witness the transformative power of study abroad, which is why we are assisting students who otherwise might not have the means to participate in an international education program,” said James Bell, STA Travel Commercial VP. “The students who benefit from our scholarships return home talking about gaining personal insights and global perspectives. When we hear these stories, we know we are getting a great return on our investment.”

STA Travel’s donation in 2010 helped five students realize their study abroad goals:

Kayla Ihrig, a fine art major from the University of Arizona, participated in a short-term program, “Edge of the Outback – Photography,” at La Trobe University in Mildura, Australia.
Kathryn Ehrlich, an international studies major from the University of Denver, is participating in a year-long program at Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan.
John DeSerio, an East Asian studies master’s degree student from Columbia University, is participating in a year-long program at Tibet University in Lhasa, China.
Matthew Ross Ovington, a media arts major from the University of South Carolina, is participating in a year-long program at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan.
Derek Rogers, a cinema and photography major from Ithaca College, will participate in an academic semester at Kanda University in Tokyo, Japan.
“Australia – and this opportunity – was honestly one of the best things that has ever happened to me,” said Kayla Ihrig, who visited Mutawintji National Park and other sights during her photography course in Australia. “This trip exceeded all of my expectations, and I have a newfound want and need to travel. I wouldn’t change anything about my trip, and I’m so grateful for my STA Travel scholarship that made it possible.”
